Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.
In this installment we see Charles opening up more to Anna and revealing that even he, as the feared right arm of the Marrock, can and indeed has formed strong friendships. He decides it's time to buy Anna a horse of her own (to distract her perhaps?) and who would be a more suitable breeder than his old friend, Joseph. The ties that Charles and Joseph share go deep and even though Joseph's family are Werewolves, he always chose to remain human. Anna is delighted to see this secret side of Charles but when they arrive, it's to learn a powerful Fae has targeted Joseph's family and pretty soon they discover that more than one child in the area has disappeared! Something truly nasty is targeting children and Anna and Charles will stop at nothing to cut out the rot!
Dead Heat is a five star read. This series just keeps going from strength to strength and even though it started as a short story, has truly carved its own niche. This book investigates the strength of the relationship these characters share. It's fascinating to see how throughout the course of this story Anna's faith in Charles allows him to see himself as more than just the Pack's bogey man.
Charles may be strong but he always holds a part of himself back but with a very determined Omega at his side, all bets are most definitely off. The powerful connection and feelings of love they share lifts this story to a place that few authors manage. Yes, it's intense but don't expect meaningless sex scenes as they would truly be superfluous here. As for the action, well as you would expect from Ms Briggs, it is thick and fast and yet not always what you expect. Yes, this is essentially a Werewolf tale but with the addition of humans, the author cleverly manages to steer the story in a different direction to previous books.
This was a solid story that took me on quite an emotional ride. I think it might well be my favourite so far. Truly an entertaining read with its mixture of an emotional driven story that blends action and romance seamlessly. I couldn't put it down and I doubt many other readers will want to either. A huge recommendation from me.
I was gifted a copy of this by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Highly Recommend (but start at the very beginning)!!!!
