I was intrigued by Viking Warrior Rising with its band of warriors led by their King Leif and the very idea that they each possessed their own inner berserker was not something I'd seen much of before. Now add in a heroine, Naya, who has been genetically modified to be what I can only describe as a super soldier and you can see that ancient meets modern and then some!
Naya is not the only one experimented on though and when she first encounters Leif she actually saves him! Yes, I know it doesn't exactly sound like Leif is terribly big and bad (actually he really is!), but his opponents have poisoned him and he hasn't forgot the female who he rewarded with a kiss! That kiss awakens so much more than just passion, it awakens his inner berserker and it's shouting Mine, Mine, Mine!
I wasn't initially sure how I felt about Viking Warrior Rising. The synopsis said 352 pages and yet I seemed to be getting through it quite quickly (halfway before I knew it!) and I was a bit confused as to why our heroine, Naya, had been experimented on. There is a revelation at the end which made sense but I just wanted to know a little more about the nefarious agency and its scientist’s motives.
Leif and his warriors are charged by Odin and Freya to protect the world from Loki, as it's prophesied he alone will cause and survive Ragnarok or the end of the world. My problem here was, where is Loki? What did add so much to the story however were the interactions between the various characters surrounding Leif and Naya. These ancient Vikings use magic and modern technology but still seem stymied at times. I liked the curmudgeonly Harald who acts as Leif’s second in command, but think the two Valkyries have really interesting stories to tell. They are so very different; one is warlike and fierce, whilst the other is gentle and a healer.
Luckily as I got to the final third of this story, I really started to enjoy the plot a lot more. As for the romance, well Leif is a very possessive lover but he has his hands full as Naya is a woman on a mission! I can say no more as it would spoil the book for others but these hot passionate warriors entertained me and the Norse mythology just added to it.
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
