Six has risen steadily in the ranks of the Collective since his inclusion into the Dark Kindred at age fourteen. Now, to his dismay, he is suddenly having dreams he cannot ignore—dreams of a girl with dark eyes and silky black hair who fears him desperately. Despite the fact that he is supposed to feel nothing, Six finds himself drawn to the girl. And when he is ordered by his superior to claim her, he comes in search of his future bride.
Now they are locked in a struggle of light versus dark...cold versus warmth. For when Mei-Li is near him, Six’s frozen heart begins to thaw. Though the Dark Kindred warrior is determined not to commit “Feel-crime” he cannot contain the emotions growing within him for the petite girl he snatched from Earth. But with the newfound feelings of love and desire, come some much darker feelings. In order to love Mei-Li, Six will have to face the darkness within and a tragic past he has locked away for years.
Will he survive the memories that surface…or will they drive him mad?
Mei-Lei works hard as a social worker to keep the children involved in her cases safe but she keeps being plagued by dreams of a strange man with a frightening appearance and it's getting harder to concentrate at work. When she falls foul of an abusive stepfather, the last thing she expects is to turn around and see the Kindred warrior from her dreams but that's exactly what happens and to make matters worse he insists she leave with him! Mei-Lei along with all single human women had signed a contract stating if a Kindred male claims her she would willingly spend one month with him but she was never quite prepared for this to really happen.
Six is part of the Dark Kindred and has slowly risen up the ranks to his current position within the Collective. Living amongst a race that prizes mechanical enhancements whilst outlawing emotions, he had never expected to feel called to take a bride but his recent dreams are an anomaly he had not prepared for. When ordered by his superior to journey to Earth to claim his bride he reluctantly agrees but something is not quite right and Six finds himself questioning all that he has previously believed.
To experience emotion is considered a crime on the planet Zeaga Four where Six returns with Mei-Lin but for the limited time whilst they undergo the claiming period Mei-Lin should be safe but nothing is as straightforward as Six believes. Not everyone wants peace and by bringing Mei-Lin home to his world he opens himself up to experiencing conflicting thoughts. Is it possible that his own base nature is overriding his judgment and logic? Can he really let Mei-Lin go when the time is up? Mei-Lin certainly didn't want to leave with Six but the longer she spends time with him, the more she comes to realise that the hard male is definitely not a monster!
I love this series and it just keeps building with twists and turns that constantly surprise the reader. Initially the protagonists in these stories were the Scourge, but in more recent books there's a new presence that seeks to cause widespread destruction. I found the total lack of emotion and desire for mechanical enhancements to be very unsettling and it's not difficult to imagine how truly terrifying Six and his fellow Dark Kindred warriors are. Poor Mei-Lin has every reason to be afraid of Six but the tiny heroine is used to standing up to bullies in her job so is more than a match for him. What really worked here though, is the fact that it's Six who is vulnerable and at times the author really tugs on the readers heart strings. Six has chosen to have his emotions blocked and along with them his memories of his previous life, but with Mei-Lin in danger he is willing to take a harrowing journey that will change his life forever.
A wonderful sci-fi romance with very hot scenes but there's no instant love and it works better this way, as the two central characters learn to trust each other. I loved that the petite heroine was capable of holding her own but it's the sweet virgin hero who’s willing to learn all about Earth females that made me laugh out loud. Bless him, but I really do think perhaps he tries a bit too hard! There is a lot of humour within this book which is clearly meant to offset the very emotional journey the hero is forced to take but I found the character Yipper, who is an alien surgeon, to be a tad annoying if honest, but as light relief I'm sure some readers will enjoy it.
What I love about these books is the fact that each one is different and I'm amazed at the speed the author writes them. Very sexy and pure escapism but written with heart and always a delight to read. This book ticks all my boxes and I'm loving the length as I hate short books. Which brings me to another point, these books are an excellent value for the money and for me, this series is a keeper. There's a resolution to this story between Mei-Lin and Six but the story of the Kindred is far from over and that makes me extremely happy!
I was very lucky and received a copy of this as a gift from the author in exchange for an honest review and as it's a keeper for me.
