Dimitri wants only one thing: revenge. His stepfather, Hendrix, has caused him nothing but pain and heartache. At last Dimitri can take something—someone—important to Hendrix and make him pay: Jess.
Jess is feisty and strong headed. Her past haunts her and connects her to the dangerously dark Dimitri in an unexpected way. Dimitri keeps his secrets locked deep inside, and Jess is drawn to this broken man like no one before.
With little to cling to besides their haunting pasts, both could have been doomed to lives spent raging against the darkness that holds them prisoner. Instead, it seems that as their pain draws them closer together, it is their desire that will set them free.
Jess has spent the last few years slowly rebuilding herself after a truly awful childhood. Hiding away with Hendrix and his crew she has slowly learnt it is possible to love and trust others but finding herself at the mercy of Dmitri reawakens all her memories and the nightmare has only just begun. Jess thought Dmitri was a pirate but he's so much more and as Jess becomes more and more entangled in his world, she discovers a dark underbelly with illegal fights where danger is always just a heartbeat away!
Like many readers, I had strong reservations about this series but Ms Jewel sure does know how to create a good story. These larger than life characters are not for the faint-hearted and indeed at times their actions are truly vile and yet, oh boy am I hooked. In Where Darkness Lies both the hero and the heroine are damaged people and there are moments when I seriously thought how in earth can they overcome the tragic circumstances that surround them. Jess has genuine reason to fear men and as for Dmitri? Well his story and how he copes, makes for some interesting interactions and that's a fact.
My only reservation was a déjà vu moment when the action took place on a tropical island and I had an awful feeling this might just turn into a rehash of the previous book, Enslaved by the Ocean; but no, the author had numerous tricks up her sleeve to bring a completely fresh story to the mix. This is a piece of romantic fiction so please suspend all belief and go with the flow as it's an amazing ride. Unexpected twists (although I had guessed something) and serious moments of what on earth? But never a dull moment and I love the snarky comments and quick dialogue. This was a delight to read and I can't wait to read about other characters in this series. They are not too numerous but intriguing enough to make me want more.
