George Holloway has spent his life alone, exploring the treacherous beauty of the Colorado Rockies. He's the best survival expert Search and Rescue has, which makes him the obvious choice to lead Ellie Price through deadly terrain to find her missing father. There's just one problem-Ellie's everything George isn't. She's a city girl, charming, gregarious, delicate, small. And when she looks up at him with those big, dark eyes, he swears he would tear the world apart to keep her safe.
With a killer on the loose, he may have no choice.
Ellie's determined to find her father no matter the cost. But as she and her gorgeous mountain of a guide fight their way through an unforgiving wilderness, they find themselves in the crosshairs of a dangerous man in search of revenge. And they are now his prey...
This series vividly paints a picture of small town life in the often inhospitable Colorado Rocky Mountains but it's the question of just who murdered the poor soul whose body was discovered in book one that titillated my interest but frankly the death seemed more like an execution! So I, along with others whilst enjoying the romantic aspects, keep a watchful eye out for clues.
Yes, each book features a different couple so as a reader I'm thinking boy meets girl but this time it's more mountain picks up woman, literally! George has been a character quietly hugging the sidelines but this time this taciturn seemingly grumpy male steps forward and it's about time if you ask me. If honest, I wanted a tiny bit more about his background but can't fault the author on the delicious build up to the relationship.
Ellie is without a doubt the polar opposite of gorgeous George. A city girl through and through and yet so full of gumption, if a little lacking in practical knowledge. She is determined to find her father but doesn't think it through and arrives woefully unprepared but that's when the fun really begins. Persuading George to guide her proves surprisingly easy but their hike through rough terrain is anything but. I loved the adventure and how well it was described but best of all, the interactions between our couple as Ellie interprets George's way of grunting just had me smiling. In fact, the whole opening up of George, as Ellie both charmed and impressed him, was truly a beautiful thing.
Now it is a suspense so there's always going to be danger and it is found in the most unexpected places. We know there's a killer on the loose but the ending just left me thinking how could it end like that? Whilst not the usual cliffhanger as there's a huge reveal, there's not really an explanation, sigh. A sweet romance with captivating scenes of action and adventure as those mountains are brutal!
Yes, I'm hooked and so looking forward to the next book!
I was gifted a copy of this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
