Billionaire dragon shifter and Bloodkin Triad member Warrick Voclain is no stranger to power. But when his trusted steward’s beautiful granddaughter—all grown up and successful in her own right—seems to be using illegal magic in his presence, he is thrown for a loop. And the fact that she’s doing so to protect him? Alarming.
Samantha Vine needs to stay under the radar, or her secret gift will get her and her granddad killed. She didn’t intend for her quick visit home to stretch into weeks in Warrick’s company, but anyone striking at Warrick would also hurt her granddad. Only she has the ability to see what’s coming…though she’ll need Warrick’s help to stop it.
The use of such magic is punishable by death, and Warrick’s position on the Triad requires that he adhere to the rule of law. But the attraction between them is electric, stirring his blood and straining his control.
Adversaries wait in every shadow, and the easiest way to strike down a powerful dragon is to go for the heart…in Warrick’s case, Samantha. With fire and blood, he’ll reshape the world into one that’s safe for her. And those that don’t bend to his will? They will burn.

So briefly, we are back in the lives of the Bloodkin (dragons) and due to recent events there are huge upsets on the horizon. A death means a place has opened up on the all-powerful Triad but just who will get that seat is hotly contended. Warrick Voclain may not be the oldest surviving Triad member but as the public face of Bloodkin, he's not about to be pushed around, although to be frank, he does have to suffer from an interfering mother!
Samantha Vine is part of a human family who have served the Voclains faithfully for more years than she can remember. Her grandfather is Warrick’s steward but he once did something that would mean both he and Samantha, if their secret was discovered, would be killed. Samantha treads warily around the Bloodkin but her teenage crush on Warrick has fueled many a fantasy. When pushed into a corner by Warrick’s mother, she has no choice but to use her magic and it's a slippery slope she now careens down.
These are crafty, voracious, bloodthirsty Dragons and I love them! Ms Kellison has made me understand that dragons are older than dirt, probably crawled out of the proverbial mire, and truly are the ultimate predator. Yet, some have evolved not just to use humans but to treasure and protect them. Warrick would destroy anyone who harmed those who belong to him (yep, possessive dragon!) but he also knows the Vine family have free will. Samantha has always intrigued him with her sassy attitude but her goal was a life away from Bloodkin and Warrick respects that. Yet, here she is, part of his life again and there's something very odd going on. The more time they spend together, the more Warrick fears his covetous nature might not let him be able to part with Samantha and the tension between them just keeps rising. It's not rushed, the couple explore each other's depths and when it's time to make a stand, boy do they come out fighting!
Yes, Awakened by Fire is a romance but hot diggity, it's such a fabulous journey for Samantha and Warrick. There's a lot of underhanded activities going on and the Bloodkin fight dirty but for me, it's the treachery and betrayal closer to home that resonated the most. This worked as a standalone, had a gripping storyline, and fulfilled all my hopes for a dragon romance. Lots going on, so never a dull moment and I'm enjoying the supporting characters and their quirks too, so definitely a recommendation from me.
