Special Agent Steve Coll is tasked to recruit Maisie for Chimera, the organization that polices shared dreams. At first he’s taken with her funny and carefree spirit, then brought to his knees by her tough and passionate soul. Touching her is forbidden ecstasy, but Steve can’t resist breaking the rules with Maisie. A darkness is gathering, evil preparing to strike, and only Maisie stands between it and innocent lives. No matter what happens, Steve won’t let her stand alone—he’ll die before he leaves her side.
Maisie has been acting as an illegal courier in the dreamscape known as Reve but it's all gone bad and now she's in danger but struggles to let anyone close. Enter Steve Coll agent for Chimera and a man with so many secrets that to truly know him is to fear him. He's determined the annoying and tempting Maisie will join him and refuses to take no for an answer. However, Maisie is a tough nut to crack and doesn't take anything lying down!
I'm really enjoying these books but they are too short! I found Lay Me Down moved the story along quite nicely. We are finally getting to the heart of what it means to go into a lucid dream state and just what can happen. In the previous book the dark side was only hinted at but here, Ms Kellison allows her imagination free reign and the reader gets a better understanding of just how truly dangerous the world of sleep can be.
As to the characters, well Maisie is no push over and she's a young woman who needs so much to be free but freedom can often come at a hefty price. Maisie is an amazingly talented dream walker with as yet untapped abilities but she doesn't always see the bigger picture. With Steve Coll around we really start to appreciate just what could be possible, as he's an exceptional guy with numerous hidden talents. Reading about him is a little like pealing an onion as he has so many layers. He may not have the snark and wit of Maisie but he's a man of passions, although I think I still prefer Rook from the first book.
Ms Kellison takes the storyline in a whole new direction with this installment. We start to see just what evil lurks on the other side and just how it can interact with the waking world and we also finally have a believable protagonist which helps direct the plot even more.
This series is really hotting up and coming into it's own now. Fabulous writing that's so descriptive and the unique concept has really captured my attention.
Lay Me Down is an e-book available at Amazon and B & N for $2.99
