When a body washes up on the shore of a rural Montana lake, police officer Dane Burke is faced with the task of finding the killer—even if it means he will be forced to put his life and heart at risk by working with a drifter. As the truth of Aura’s Mustang-shifting nymph ways are revealed, Dane learns exactly the amount of danger he and Aura are in, but can’t force himself to leave a case unsolved when the truth is just outside his grasp.
When the killer decides he needs to take another victim—Dane—Aura must choose between their forbidden love and her immortal life. Can there be life without love or is death her only choice?
Aura is a nymph and has been around for a very long time . She's not just some lusty temptress. She can shift into a Mustang but there's a price for her abilities. If a human male and a nymph fall in love, the curse Aura carries will see the man dying from a horribly, tragic death. Suddenly having the power to seduce doesn't seem quite so appealing!
Aura has traveled to Montana searching for her sister, Natalie, who has gone missing but what Aura discovers is truly too gruesome for words. She finds a severed hand and although it's not Natalie's it's still a frightening discovery, Aura's made of strong stuff and calls the authorities but that lands her slap bang in the middle of the investigation. Dane is determined to catch the killer but there's just something about Aura that doesn't feel right. She's a woman of mystery and Dane's pretty sure he intends to uncover all her secrets but keeping his hands off her is proving to be almost impossible.
On the hunt for the killer, it soon becomes apparent to Aura she's not the only Nymph in the area and it looks as if her secretive race are being targeted. Finding Natalie before it's too late is essential, but there are more secrets to discover in Montana. Aura needs all her wits about her but Dane is proving to be a most delicious distraction.
I'm a bit on the fence about this book. First, I must say the premise is very good and I love it when an author ties mythology into a modern story. There's a lot of mystery to solve in this story and I really liked the plot twists. It's a murder mystery and I always love guessing "who done it" and just why so right up my street.
It's also a romance and I think that's what felt off to me. It just all seemed a little too immediate with the hero and heroine latching on to each other almost as soon as they meet! I get Aura is irresistible but in the midst of all that she's discovered (severed hand!), I wasn't comfortable with the instant lust. Having said that, she is determined to do whatever it takes to find her missing sister and I liked her steely backbone.
Dane's an interesting character and his background adds colour to the story. Without too many spoilers, I'd just say his family add greatly to the storyline and Ms Winters explores how difficult family life can be. This is not a particularly loving family and tension abounds but it added greatly to the plot.
Is it a romance? Well, it's not an easy one as obviously Aura does not want to experience love as it would mean losing Dane. She's trying so hard to guard her heart. These two strong personalities are both very passionate so expect some heated moments. The ending was a huge surprise and I admire Ms Winters' ability to think outside the box. She can certainly write interesting prose and her descriptions brought images to life. I just found the dialogue a little jumpy at times. This is easily read as a stand alone novel but, I think it's probably best to read in order, if possible.
