After fleeing Annwyn three centuries ago, Ella built a life in the mortal world making gowns for European royalty and playing in mortal intrigues. Now those Courts are long gone, and she dresses Hollywood starlets. Mortals come and go, and she is always alone. She longs for the home she left behind.
He has been dreaming of the coming battle all his life…
Isaac Norton is a returned soldier. Now home, he is restless, and his reoccurring dream is becoming more frequent: he is fighting in a snow covered field stained with blue blood. When he sees Ella, he knows she isn’t human. And she knows what he is: a changeling.
Ella can give Isaac the answers he needs, but there will be a price to pay. His soul.
Ella has lived amongst the mortals for countless years and enjoys her time there but realizes she won't survive if she stays, so prepares to return to Annwyn. Ella's made quite a name for herself designing and making clothes for the rich and famous. Her dresses have that little bit extra, as she can imbue them with her magic. When she goes to meet a new client though, she gets an unexpected surprise as the door is opened by a beautiful man and he's not entirely human, he's a Changeling!
Isaac is a former soldier living with his aspiring actress sister. He's always known he is different, with a rare ability to sense things. Night after night he's haunted by dreams of battle, dead Fae, and a woman who always stays just out of reach. When he meets the woman hired to make his sister Melody's new gown, he realizes she's not quite what she seems. When Isaac looks at her, he can see she's not exactly what she pretends to be, but he's not the only one to question Ella's identity!
This is quite a short read but it's filled with all the action and romance at which Ms Husk excels. Ella is a strong character who right from the start has lustful thoughts about Isaac and as he's total eye candy it's not surprising. What did surprise me though was Melody! Her actions have repercussions leading these characters on an adventure that will see Isaac embracing his heritage.
As always, the world of Annwyn is populated with such diverse characters and it's such a unique world Ms Husk has penned. The story pulled me in right from the start and was quite shocking at times. You will cheer for these two characters as they undertake their journey. Isaac deserves his chance at happiness and it was lovely to catch up with Ella, the daughter of the former Lord of the Hunt, still had her part to play in the power struggle occurring in Annwyn.
I am so looking forward to the next book in this series and would advise reading them all as it's turning out to be such a compelling series. If you are in the mood for a little magic and romance, then get The Changeling Soldier. Great world building, fast paced, and plot driven, a simply fabulous read.
