Now Ellie faces a frightening new life, abandoned by the man she loves and tormented by malevolent spirits unleashing their vengeance upon the earth. Her only shot at protecting humanity?and herself?from the demon scourge is to claim the mark of the god Ahone as her own. Finding it means trusting Dr. David Preston, a handsome professor of Native American studies whose skepticism is surpassed only by his attraction to Ellie. Together they must finish what the Curse Keepers began, defying the forces of darkness to face hell on earth?and unlock the truth of Ellie's destiny.
In the previous book we met Ellie and Collin. They are descendants of those who consigned gods, spirits and one unlucky village to a hell realm and are charged with keeping those same spirits out of our world. Collin had mislead Ellie though and because of him the curse is broken and it's all Ellie can do to protect herself let alone the rest of humanity. Realising Collin's agenda might not be quite the same as her own, Ellie seeks help uncovering more about the legend and just what she can do to banish it once and for all and the evil creeping ever closer.
David studies Native American history and could possibly hold the key to solving Ellie's problems. He's not keen at first but when the lost colony suddenly reappears David starts to question just how much Ellie knows. Unfortunately he's not the only one as people connected to Ellie keep winding up dead and the police are involved. Even more sinister, local hoods are chasing her as well! There's no easy way for Ellie to explain that a god is responsible, but she's being hunted and time is running out.
I really liked the first book, The Curse Keepers, with all it's Native American mythology but with this story the author has surpassed herself! It's a fabulous book full of history and suspense. Yes, there is a romantic element but even that is nothing straightforward. In the previous book I thought Collin was meant to be with Ellie but then right at the end he did something unbelievable that has left Ellie drifting. In this book David appears and yes, he's a love interest too, but a triangle? Really? I did so not expect that and it's just one more aspect that makes this book truly fabulous.
This is a riveting read with so much going on I was reeling. The Native American folklore isn't just dropped in occasionally, it's essential to everything happening in this intense plot. Ms Swank has so many secrets still to reveal as Ellie struggles not just to get the gate sealed once and for all, but also to find out just why her mother died. Is there a connection to the curse? Ellie is starting to learn things about her parents that are shocking and somehow Collin knows what's going on but as she can't trust him. What's she to do? So many unanswered questions and when she meets the god Okeus his plans for Ellie are terrifying!
If you love a good mystery and enjoy a paranormal twist then you will love this book. Action, romance and a great plot. It's like being on the most exhilarating roller coaster as the author pulls the reader further into the story. It's absolutely gripping and I can't wait to read more!
