How can he resist his blood rose…
Gerrod, mastyr vampire of the Merhaine Realm, never thought to have his blood-needs satisfied by a mere human. But Abigail is no ordinary woman. She stuns him with her telepathy as well as the richness of her blood. However, her human DNA makes her an unacceptable mate. Yet how can Gerrod turn her away when she alone has satisfied his blood-starvation for the first time in a hundred-and-fifty-years?
Will she fall to temptation and give herself to a vampire…
When the dreaded enemy of all realm-folk, the Invictus, attacks at a fae wedding, Abigail’s simple human life gets turned upside down. She doesn’t know if she has the courage to pursue a path that means giving herself body and soul to a mastyr vampire. Will she return to her normal existence in Flagstaff, Arizona? Or will she embrace the dark…
Embrace the Dark is the first in The Blood Rose Series.
Imagine, if you can, that there are realms or dimensions that coexist alongside the one we all live in. Now in these mystical realms live all sorts of paranormal creatures from Trolls to Goblins and of course, powerful Vampires! Gerrod is a master vampire and protects those within his realm from the dreaded Invictus who seek to prey upon the unwary, but there's one particular human woman who draws him like no other. Gerrod is sorely tempted by Abigail, the baker who has set up shop in his land, but what he needs (blood) and what he wants (Abigail) sadly are poles apart.
Abigail, like most of humanity, has learned to accept the supernatural world that has been revealed but that doesn't mean it's not a terrifying place at times. There is one particular vampire though who for whatever reason seems to deliberately challenge Abigail. Everything comes to a head at a Fae wedding when a chance touch between them awakens something that connects them both on a deeper level. A resonance or a vibration, if you will, that flows through Gerrod calls to Abigail and opens up a whole new path between them. Before they have time to discuss what is happening, there's an attack and Gerrod is forced to defend his people from the heinous and bloodthirsty Invictus!
Embrace the Dark is the first in this series and introduces all sorts of ideas. I enjoyed the idea of various realms being governed by strong alpha male types and would be interested to read more about them. We do briefly meet other vampires in this story and it was quite a departure as Ms Roane fully explored just what a Blood Rose could really be. No spoilers here but a Blood Rose could cause an awful lot of problems!
What I found a little strange was the unique frequency vampires give off and I confess I had a certain Beach Boys ear worm running through my head! It's such an unusual idea that it took me a little while to fully embrace it but when the Blood Rose premise was fleshed out it all made sense.
As usual, Ms Roane writes a steamy story but I'm not sure that it's my favourite by her. The heroine is brave and yet I didn't really identify with her in any way and the hero, Gerrod, had a strange way of conversing at times! I think sex talk is always difficult but somehow this time for me it felt far-fetched. Would I read more? Well yes, as I did finish this story and realise the world building is only just beginning. I may not have been as instantly sucked into the storyline as I usually am but I enjoyed reading something a little different.
