King Finn Sylcan has searched for the one who can bring the magick back to his world, Edra, for eons. An old prophecy told of a female of both Dark and Light elven descent, a hybrid both Calim and Morna. It is said she is the only one who can repair the damage the war between the Dark and Light kingdoms caused. But after searching for so long, Finn never dreamed that she’d just show up outside his palace walls. Or that she’d be his mate.
As I understand it, the Skeleton Key series will be up to thirty standalone books written by various authors. Each adventure starts with the turning of a key and it just so happens in this story we are led to a land of fading magic, waiting for that one person who can set it free; but for Ava what lies on the other side of the door is a huge surprise!
Okay, I won't go into lots of details because the synopsis is quite clear and also it's a novella so it would be terribly wrong to give too much of the story away. Yes, it's a romance but thankfully no instant lust. Yes, we get mutual attraction and that little thing known as chemistry but there's no getting jiggy straight away. The couple have a lot to contend with as Ava is a thoroughly modern miss but when we meet her she feels lonely and only really has her work.
Now from the beginning we know something is very wrong there and indeed it's briefly touched on later in the story but as it's not a full length book there's unfortunately just a lack of information. What does work for me was the introduction of a character I wasn't expecting. Proof positive that nature versus nurture isn't always a sure thing, but I really liked that it wasn't predictable. Another plus for me was Ms Davis' take on how to punish wrong doings at the end and for me there couldn't have been a better method.
So my final thoughts are, if honest, I really wanted more but having said that, I'd happily read more from this author and hope she ventures into stories featuring the Fae again soon. There are so many vampire and shifter books that those such as I, who enjoy paranormal, are always looking for something different.
I was gifted a copy of this via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
