Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.
Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey: and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him: and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.
This book begins a journey for some quite intriguing characters. On the one hand, we meet two young dragons, Ember and Dante who have finally been allowed to infiltrate the human world and what an amazing experience it is! Here they are living and playing in California and the world is a wonderful place, or is it? These two young dragons are there to learn to pass as human but there's a secret war brewing and it's about to get very messy indeed.
Garrett knows dragons are not the stuff of fairy tales as he is a soldier working for Saint George, the secret order that protects mankind from the bloodthirsty dragons. He has trained to be the ultimate soldier but an assignment watching the mysterious Ember is about to shake his beliefs to the very core. Garrett is not the only one who wants to get close to Ember though, as there's a rogue dragon in the area and these very separate worlds are about to collide and it's not going to be pretty!
It's quite hard to be nonjudgmental about this book as it's what I absolutely hate the most, the dreaded cliffhanger! Oh and trust me, it's a doozy! So what did I like? There's a lot of world building occurring as more information seeps into the story concerning the dragons and their purpose might not be a happy one for mankind. Subjugated and forced to hide for millennia, it seems the dragons have a plan and poor Ember is learning that not everything is as straightforward as she once believed. Add to that, the reason for the rogue dragon, Cobalt, and perhaps treachery of the worst kind is happening. Oh and speaking of a certain Cobalt, it seems a romantic triangle is pulling Ember in more than be direction! Loyal to her brother Dante but curious about the attractive bad boy, Cobalt and then of course there's Garrett, a human who appeals to something deep inside Ember but he's human so that's not going to happen, is it? As I said a cliffhanger and one that leaves so many avenues open.
