He thwarted connection of any kind…
Fearing that his newly emerged grayle power will kill innocent ascenders, Samuel Daman struggles to keep his distance from beautiful Vela Stillwell. But the breh-hedden has struck and her light floral scent tears at his restraint. When the enemy draws them both into the darkening, a place of secret travel for Third ascenders, will Samuel learn to control his power, or will he destroy what he desires most?
She hid from grief…
Vela Stillwell wanted a new life, away from Militia Headquarters, away from the reminder of all she’d lost when her husband died five years earlier. Seeking a more reclusive occupation, she finishes her last day of work only to have Samuel Daman and the infamous breh-hedden sweep through her life. Though trying to disconnect from her new emerging power and from Samuel, the call of the darkening pulls Vela into an adventure that both terrifies her, yet reveals the truth about her deepest desires. Will she succumb to the breh-hedden, or will her fears prevent her from living life to the fullest?
Mortals can ascend to another life with powers beyond our wildest dreams and one who has done that is Samuel. Samuel is a powerful vampire type warrior who has spent years in captivity being tortured and whilst he was there he developed a new and deadly power that some refer to as Grayle. Samuel finds it incredibly difficult to control his newest power and is plagued by guilt at the loss of innocent lives but has no choice but to reveal his emerging abilities when one of the mighty What-Bees is surrounded by thirteen Death Vampires. Faced with no choice, Samuel agrees to go and demonstrate just what he can do before the leader of the Warriors of the Blood but when he arrives he finds something he had no idea was waiting for him!
Vela is a widow and wants nothing more than to put war and fighting behind her and to that end she has trained to be a counsellor and is about to start her new job. She has tried to keep her head down but her well meaning friends are determined to give her one night of fun before she leaves. What no one expected was a chance meeting with a man that sets off every erotic sense in Vela's body! Just one look, just the slightest scent, and then of course there is that moment when they touch! A volcanic passion erupts between them and heaven help any man who tries to separate them. But wait! What is happening? Two complete strangers and yet are they really strangers? Samuel is the man Vela has dreamed of (quite literally) and when she senses danger, it seems Samuel is not the only one with an amazing new ability emerging as Vela can walk in the Darkening and not just that, but control it too. This couple has a duty to defend their realm and indeed humanity but just what is happening between them and can they trust these new and totally insane needs driving them?
I absolutely love these stories. Although I freely admit, I seem to have read them out of order but it has not spoiled my enjoyment one iota. So many series seem to rehash old ideas but Ms Roane seems to constantly come up with new ways to entertain her readers. Yes, it's a very steamy romance as the couple connects but it's also such fun reading about the antics of these larger than life characters. You have to be bowled over by Endelle, the Leader of Second Earth, with her crazy behaviour and don't get me started on the latest addition to the fold, Merl. I predict a lot more to come from that particular gentleman but for now I'm happy to wallow in all the goodness that Samuel and Vela share, sigh! A true partnership and it's wonderful to share their journey. I love that Samuel is not a typical Vampire type hero and who doesn't want a strong heroine her spider like reflexes to protect him? Hilarious!
The Darkening ticked all my boxes and if you miss this series and you are a lover of paranormal romance then you are missing out on an amazing ride. If honest, it's slightly shorter than I like but still a great read.
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.
