Times are changing and as the old Alpha steps down in favour of Roman the new Alpha reality comes knocking at the door. Hugo is a Bear shifter who has always had his Alpha's back but it's kind of complicated because Hugo has always known that he is in love with Lucienne, the wife of his Alpha. This strong taciturn male has remained loyal to his Pride but now an unprecedented crossroads is fast approaching.
Moira met Hugo ten years ago in a bar and yes, he was drowning his sorrows but she felt the connection between them and didn't hesitate to show that sexy bear just how good things could be between them. One hot night of loving and Moira knew what she wanted and Hugo was most definitely it! Believing that Hugo wanted her, she arrived at Lone Pine only to discover that for him it was just a casual hook up and not a fresh start. Now Moira is forced to watch that stubborn bear live his lonely life as she remembers only too well how good it was between them; but with so much changing around them isn't it time for Moira to finally face reality? To Moira, that bear felt like home but he never felt the same or did he? There's nothing as stubborn as a grumpy old bear!
I do enjoy these stories about these shifters, but for some reason I didn't really believe in the romance between these two characters. I struggled to really feel any chemistry between them, if honest. I'm not sure why it didn't really work for me but I guess it's that I found the reasons Hugo gave to Moira to be a bit of a stretch. Granted he carried a lot of guilt but I felt he should have handled things differently. This was not my favourite book in this series admittedly but I will look out for the next book and hope for a story I can love and not just like.
I was gifted a copy of this via NetGalley for an honest review.
