Welcome to Caris Roane's vampire collection, two very different novellas that track the journey of two powerful vampires. In entirely different ways, both BRINK OF ETERNITY and EMBRACE THE DARK, explore the sexy mystique of the warrior vampire, each over-burdened by the responsibilities of his job and in need of the love of a good woman.
BRINK OF ETERNITY follows the tradition of the Guardians of Ascension and introduces the Militia Warrior aspect of Second Earth. First published in July of 2011, the story features Warrior Gideon and his Mortal Earth lover, Elise Jordan, as she answers her call to ascension. BRINK OF ETERNITY launches a novella series called, Dawn of Ascension. The second novella, THE DARKENING, releases on Valentine’s Day, 2014. But the world is the same, and the Warriors of the Blood often show up as well as the magnificent Endelle.
EMBRACE THE DARK takes you into the world of the Blood Rose series, in which the blood-needs of a master vampire can only be met by one gifted woman. First published in May of 2012, EMBRACE THE DARK explores the Nine Realms of North America, a world inhabited not just by vampires, but by the fae, by charming trolls, and the evil Invictus pairs that prey on the weak of the realm. But ruling each realm, and more powerful than any other creature in the land, is a Mastyr Vampire. Our beleaguered Mastyr Vampire, Gerrod, suffers from chronic blood starvation and can only be sated by a phenomenon called a blood rose. But how can he accept Abigail as his blood rose, when she’s a mere human?
The first story is a natural follow on from her Ascension stories and will surely delight fans of that series. It's a novel idea to have humanity progress to a second state of consciousness but Ms Roane explains her characters and the vampires of second earth very well and it's simply fabulous to be swept away by both old and new characters. I loved that Elise had secrets that allowed her to confound Gideon and even though the intense relationship they had shared is over, when a vision hits Elise concerning Gideon's sister, she bites the proverbial bullet and makes that call! So begins a whole new chapter for Elise and the warrior, Gideon, is about to learn that he cannot control everything!
The second story has a completely different tone and is the first book in Ms Roane's Blood Rose series which I admit I had missed until now. This book sets the scene for those that follow and we learn of magical realms or dimensions, if you will, that coexist alongside the human one we all live in. It's filled with all sorts of paranormal creatures from Trolls to Goblins and of course powerful Vampires!
Gerrod is a master vampire protecting his people from the dreaded Invictus who prey upon the unwary but there is one particular human woman who draws him like no other. Abigail, the baker, has set up shop in his territory but what he really needs (blood) and what he wants (Abigail) are sadly poles apart or are they?
Humanity might have accepted the terrifying paranormal world but Abigail is not completely immune to the vampire that constantly challenges her and when a chance touch between them awakens something deep inside that connects them, it's a shocking moment. Unfortunately, there's no time for explanations as there's a viscous attack by the bloodthirsty Invictus and so begins a series of events that will change the lives of both Abigail and Gerrod forever!
Two very different stories and I loved the Brink of Eternity story (probably my favourite of the two) as I've read the series it follows on from. Featuring gripping, scorching scenes, it was such fun catching up with a certain hilarious character who always shows an irreverence that leaves the reader gasping.
The Blood Rose story featured Vampires giving off a frequency or vibration, if you will, and I confess I did have a certain Beach Boys ear worm running through my head! It's such an unusual idea that it took me a little while to fully embrace it, but when the Blood Rose premise was fleshed out it all made sense.
I adore Ms Roane's imagination and she constantly writes seriously sexy stories that leave her readers breathless. It's so easy to get sucked into her worlds and I have to say these are most definitely not intended for readers who don't wish to enter the bedroom door! Turn off your phone, lock the door and be prepared to remain glued to your seat until you finish the book. Oh, and one more thing, maybe have a cold shower on standby!
