Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
Layla is seventeen and at school but she isn't quite like the other girls her age. Layla is half gargoyle and half demon! All she wants is to fit in and belong but her inner demon half wants to devour souls. A daily struggle that seems endless, but luckily she's found a purpose. Layla has been living with the Wardens and her unique abilities help them track demons. One Warden in particular, Zayne, has always been by her side. Layla wants so much to feel complete but her demonic heritage sets her apart.
Layla's having a normal day when everything changes! She's attacked by a demon but then the most sinfully gorgeous man she's ever seen steps in and saves her. Slight problem though, as Roth is not human, he's a demon! Roth keeps turning up and soon Layla starts to realise that maybe not everything is as black and white as she thought. Demons are bad and Wardens are good, aren't they? Yet if that's the case, why does Layla feel safe around Roth and why is she keeping secrets from Zayne?
Life for Layla is getting more dangerous by the hour as more Demons keep appearing and it looks like their radar is set to find Layla! Why are they looking for her and who can Layla really trust? Her relationship with Zayne is starting to fracture and Roth's determined to tempt her. No longer sure if she should reject Roth's overtures, Layla finds herself in danger of betraying those she loves. Layla is conflicted. Then she discovers the truth about her parentage and her world is about to come crashing down. There's a reason she's being hunted and it looks as if Hell might just about to be released on Earth!
Wow! I am not particularly a fan of young adult fiction, but had this author's name repeatedly thrown at me by my friend, Lisa, so decided to give this gargoyle book a go. So not what I expected. Yes, it's about gargoyles but it's also a very good story! I hate to mention the love triangle, definitely a theme, but happily did not swamp the storyline. I'm love the world building going in these books and it's a very engaging plot. It's fast moving with action and intense relationships that are filled with emotion.
The heroine, Layla, whilst very young and naive, has clearly felt like an outcast and so wants to be a part of the Wardens and everything they stand for. She truly does not see that even they are not perfect. It's an interesting journey she takes as she starts to realise that a pure soul can still be damaged. Her character is brave, she's prepared to fight for what she sees as right, and she has gone through such a lot. Her life is shrouded in mystery. She can't harden to stone in the way the other Wardens can but keeping her soul sucking abilities in check truly drains her. I loved that she fought so hard not to give in even though temptation is all around her.
As for Roth, well if you love a bad boy then he's certainly going to make your heart beat quicker. Not only does he look good and have amazing powers, but he has the attitude to go with it! He's a wise cracking, snarky, smoldering bad ass! Roth is also very protective. At one point I did start to question just where their relationship was going but then Ms Armintrout took the characters in a different direction. That just added to the fun. As for Zayne, well he's clearly more than slightly smitten by Layla. He's struggled to contain his feelings but it's obviously getting more difficult. Zayne is expected to fulfill his duty and take a Gargoyle mate but he's not as enamored with that idea as he should be. It will be interesting to watch him in future books as he goes from boyhood into manhood. I feel fairly sure he will be making his own choices no matter what .
White Hot Kiss is certainly more than just a story about Gargoyles, it's a tale filled with mystery and passion. No, it's not a sexually tense book but there is a strong sense of romance brewing. This story was full of twists and turns and was completely unpredictable. As for the ending, well it's not strictly a cliffhanger as there is a resolution of sorts but I'm sure many readers will be desperate for more.
Thank you Ms Armintrout for this exciting and incredibly surprising book, definitely recommended.
Just one thing left to say, are you team Roth or team Zayne?
