After drinking from the fountain of immortality along with his brothers, Maxum is condemned by the gods to be entombed in the earth. Even though he has now been granted a reprieve by day, each night he is buried anew, his rock-hard body immobilized, his bones crushed by the pressure. When he emerges, his body heals, but his spirit remains scarred. There is only one way for Maxum to be completely free: He must kill the god who cursed him.
The task will require tremendous power, so Maxum embarks on a quest to gather talismans to equip him for the battle. Then an earthy wench seduces him and steals one of his magical amulets, but he catches her. Finding herself between a rock and a hard place, she strikes a bargain. The beautiful and alluring Airianne is a skilled thief—and she can help him in his acquisition of the talismans. Will this stealthy seductress also try to steal his heart—or will their boldness end up getting them both buried?
If you ever liked Tolkien or even the more recent GoT, then you will surely enjoy this fantasy adventure. Not only do we have a medieval type landscape, along with Gods and Goddesses, but Ms Frank sprinkles more mythical creatures along the way. In a previous book, she gave us Wyverns but she ramps up the ante here with full blown dragons! Orc's, Mages, and even the odd Elf all make an appearance which really helps set the scene. Maxum has amassed a happy little band of treasure hunters to follow him but none realise quite what his mission truly is.
Into this set up comes Airianne, a thief who makes the mistake of choosing Maxum as her next target! He does what he does best and uses his brain to hunt her down and retrieve the magical amulet she stole from him. Now this leaves Arrianne in dire straits and she convinces Maxum he could use her invaluable talents. What follows is simply divine fun as Maxum fully realises Airianne is out of the frying pan and into the fire with him! Oh, he's a little bit of a trickster but his underhand tactics just added to the excitement as the chemistry they share keeps simmering! A motley crew of supporting characters are tagging along but not everyone is charmed by Airianne.
I can say no more lest I ruin the fun for other readers. Ms Frank is such a talented author and I always find myself believing in her romances. She brings a strong connection to her leading couple here and I really felt they were equals who fitted together so well. So yes, I'm a happy bunny and I'm so glad I persevered with this series. A surprise ending with a lovely epilogue that brought all four brothers back together. If you enjoy paranormal romance them Jacqueline Frank should certainly be on your list of authors to check out.
