Shuttle pilot Cory Olsen figures he’ll live fast and die young. After all, his is one of the most dangerous jobs on the Earth Ship Siren. Out among the stars, on the long journey to the penal colony on Solitaire, Cory parties hard, laughing and loving, no commitments, nothing serious.
Which would be fine if he could ignore Bella - Prisoner 2844 - and move on to the next pretty face. He can’t work out where he’s going wrong. The woman’s all lush temptation - skin like velvet, mouth like honeysuckle - but Bella’s crankier than his temperamental shuttle craft and twice as mean.
Since Bella’s doing seven years for sedition, she can’t afford entanglements of any kind, not with her old associates and especially not with a handsome, reckless flyboy who makes her laugh at all the wrong moments. With tension on the Siren reaching fever pitch, a ruthless leader emerges from among the convicts. When violence starts to escalate, rebellion seems inevitable.
If Bella’s not careful, she could lose a lot more than her wary heart. She could cost Cory Olsen his life.
We briefly met shuttle pilot Cory in Mine to Keep and his fun loving attitude really made quite an impression on me. Now we are treated to all manner of insights about him, as this live for today and party hard, pilot falls under the spell of prisoner Bella.
Bella is by no means immune to Cory's charms but is determined to keep her head down and protect herself and her mother. The trouble is not everyone onboard is happy with the way things are and pretty soon violence breaks out as a rebellion gathers momentum. Bella will have to choose a side as it's clear Cory is about to face the most dangerous ride of his life!
I loved Cory with his mischievous ways but he's capable of being serious too and his relationship with his beloved shuttle had me chuckling. Now Bella, I wasn't too sure about, if honest. Yes, she is a prisoner who really didn't do more than teach children but her protectiveness when it came to her mother just seemed a tad extreme at times. Having been a part of the underground back on earth it just didn't make much sense to me that Bella's mother was now seen as so ineffectual.
That being said I enjoyed this action packed instalment with its subversion and uprising, but obviously the uber cheeky Cory really made it for me and the sweet ending was the icing on the cake!
