As a volunteer at a shelter for lone shifters—the same one that rescued her—Makenna Wray has dedicated her life to finding homes for its residents. And when she discovers that a teen in her care is related to Ryan Conner, the broody, handsome-as-sin enforcer of the Phoenix Pack, she’s eager to help connect the two. She just wasn’t prepared to feel a connection of her own.
Lone wolves are loners for a reason—and most of them bad. Or so Ryan assumes until he meets the mysterious Makenna. Quirky and sensual, she seems to enjoy riling him, especially when she refuses to discuss her past. Although there is no mating bond, he’s sure she’s the one. All he has to do is be patient and wait. But when another pack’s sinister Alpha comes sniffing around, threatening Makenna and her shelter, this enforcer is ready to let his wolf off the leash…
Previously we have seen lone wolves as pretty much scum of the earth who are little more than hired killers. The Packs strongly believe that the lone shifters have been cast out for truly dreadful reasons and this story added a nice twist.
Makenna is a lone wolf who volunteers at a shelter where all are welcome. She struggles to find safe homes for the displaced shifters but rehoming an abused young wolf is about to get tongues wagging! Zac has an uncle who is part of the Phoenix Pack but there's something about Ryan that just makes Makenna want to shake him up. Ryan sees Makenna is trying to avoid him but you just know his instincts are to chase and what a hunt it is! Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with the shelter and sinister dealings quickly escalate into dangerous confrontations!
I thoroughly enjoyed Savage Urges and particularly loved the way the world that lone shifters find themselves in was explored. Ryan isn't really a communicator but that's okay because Makenna is never lost for words and always has a quip or two at the ready. Yes, pairing antisocial Ryan with outgoing Makenna made this very entertaining. Perhaps not as initially sexy as some previous stories but certainly well worth the wait! An engaging storyline with fantastic action as well. Also seeing new characters that aren't wolves introduced makes me very curious about what Ms Wright has planned next.
I loved it and suggest other paranormal readers get this series.
