A darkness looms over humankind, lurks in mirrors, blurs boundaries—a twilight world ruled by powerful mage Houses...
It is bleeding into our world, bringing with it banshees, wraiths, fae from the twisting forests of Twilight. But Eleanor Russo’s problem is a very different kind of phenomenon. Her dark mirror image is a wild thing, willfully seducing the very man Ellie hoped could help her.
Dr. Cam Kalamos has devoted his career to exploring the boundaries between this world and Twilight. But nothing could prepare him for the mischief and mayhem of a soul split in two.
As Ellie and Cam explore their deepest desires and barely escape with their lives, there is only one certainty: Trusting in shadows is a dangerous game.
Our heroine, Ellie, has somehow been touched by Shadow (magic) and has spent her life with her own shadow, a real and separate entity. Cam is kind of the geeky scientist who Ellie turns to as she is at the point where she feels she needs to lose her shadow permanently. Ellie is attracted to Cam from the start but unfortunately whatever she feels is only magnified by her totally outrageous shadow. Not only is Ellie's shadow brazen and lacking in shame, she is also fierce, unafraid and dangerous.
As these novellas progress, the reclusive Ellie works alongside Cam who turns out to be pretty kickass himself at times! The institute Cam works for constantly faces the dangerous Fae, but there are also Mages working in the background and there are even those who seek to enslave mankind. Does Ellie find a way to lose her shadow? Just how far will Cam go in order to claim all of the woman who he is increasingly falling in love with? There are no easy answers I'm afraid, but it's a journey full of mystery, darkness, and of course, romance.
If honest, at first I wasn't that impressed by Cam and his actions left a bad taste in my mouth. He did win me over eventually but Ellie's backstory was truly poignant and with just a few words the author captured how awful it had been. Ellie grows as a character to the point where she is completely underestimated by those around her and as for her shadow, well, read this series and decide for yourself!
Set over fourteen months, this set of novellas tell a unique and dark story and I'm so glad I got the chance to follow it.
