Supernatural bounty hunter Lilli Corbin made a pact with the Prince of Hell: She agreed to recover a book of prophecies. When she learns it could trigger the apocalypse, Lilli is forced to make the ultimate choice: save her soul, or the man she loves?
Lilli is a bounty hunter but she's no ordinary human. Her father was a demon and although she is determined to do her best to not harm innocents, she is indebted to Samael one of the demon princes. Samael previously granted her safe passage through his domain, when Lilli was hunting a particularly nasty goblin, in exchange for three tasks performed. Lilli has only one more task to perform and her soul is completely free of any hellish taint and luckily it's seemingly an easy task; retrieve a book stolen from Samael. That's an easy job for Lilli but when you work for demons nothing is ever straightforward!
In a world where magic exists, lives Aaron, a human or a magus, who is a bit of a geek in some ways but with the heart of a warrior. He is going through his late uncle's things when he discovers a very rare book that appears to be the blueprint for the apocalypse. Aaron cannot quite believe his eyes but he's about to get an even bigger shock. He's not alone in the house and the intruder seems determined to steal the book of prophecies!
This was a very quick read and I actually did quite like the kick ass heroine, Lilli, but I do feel a little disappointed in the lack of back story. Lilli is such a confident and feisty character though and her initial meeting with Aaron is quite literally nonstop action! Aaron may not be a soldier or anything similar but he is a resilient guy who refuses to sit back and watch everything he holds dear go to hell (literally!). Theirs is an instant chemistry kind of relationship which is smoking hot but not really that believable. I know this is fiction but I do enjoy a little build up but with this short story everything has a sense of immediacy. It's well written and flows easily. I actually wanted to know more about Samael and the other princes of hell so perhaps at some point Ms Warren will expand this world. Short but not terrible.
