Richart is an Immortal Guardian who uses his unique gifts to try to save humanity from the vampires and the virus they seem determined to spread. There's something really bad happening and the vampires have a new King, so it's imperative the Guardians stay sharp. Whilst on patrol one night, Richart discovers vampires taunting a young woman and when he manages to rescue her the somewhat dazed woman kisses him. For Richart it's a moment of pure bliss, but he knows the lovely woman will have no recollection of it when she wakes next morning.
Jenna was widowed quite young and has struggled to raise her son, John, alone but working night shifts has meant there's little time for romance in her life. A gorgeous man keeps coming into the store where she works and for some odd reason Jenna feels she knows him from somewhere. The more she sees him, the more Jenna really likes him and when he asks if he can cook her a meal and really get to know her it's like a dream come true. Richart cannot stay away from Jenna but there's something he has to tell her about himself. He is over two hundred years old with a mission to fulfill but his heart and soul cry out for Jenna. Could she ever accept the real him?
I first read this series a couple of years ago and found it completely different to other books featuring vampires but I am a little disappointed with this novella. I just didn't really buy into the romance and although Richart is a lovely guy, it just felt a little wishy washy to me. I thought he deserved more. Oh there is action, but it just felt too tame! I've loved these guys but this uber gentle Richart for me felt like a letdown. Yes, he is a gentleman but I missed the alpha like feel some of the other male leads in this series have shown. The romance for me just felt rushed and the heroine, Jenna, seriously needed to be a little more cautious! Glowing eyes, fangs dripping in blood and she doesn't freak? No, it just didn't work for me.
I do recommend this series to those like myself who enjoy paranormal romance but this wasn't my favourite book by the very talented Ms Duvall. There's always humour in these stories and lots of action and great world building to entertain the reader. I'm glad Richart got to step up and rescue his damsel in distress, but I'm hoping for a much longer book when his brother, Etienne, gets his story. Whilst not my personal favourite, In Still Darkness is well written and certainly paves the way for more adventures. This war they are fighting is getting more serious with every book!
I received a copy if this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
