When Cole Steele, a womanizer rumored to have killed his father, meets Maia Armstrong, a veterinarian rumored to practice magic, the sizzling romance could melt all the snow on his Wyoming ranch. And when an injured horse brings them together, Cole can’t help but believe that Maia casts spells on animals—and men. What else could explain the burning passion he feels for her and the thawing of his heart just in time for Christmas?
Cole Steele had a sadistic and cruel father who did all he could to make those around him suffer. Cole learnt that love is never going to come his way and it's far better to close off your emotions and not allow anyone to hurt you. He escaped his father’s ranch and joined the military and now years later he works undercover for the Drug Enforcement Agency but the recent unexplained murder of his father has finally brought him home. What Cole didn't expect to find was a younger brother who he never knew existed and even worse he realises that Jase was equally abused by their father. Two tortured souls, unsure if they can trust each other but both united in their opinion that Christmas has no place in their lives.
Maia is a veterinarian who has an uncanny gift for communicating with the animals she treats. She has always moved around as she doesn't want her clients to freak out and has experience of just how ignorant some people can be. Now, if only she could convince the dangerously attractive Cole Steele, that she's not interested maybe her life could keep going smoothly. Cole sees a woman that draws him in like no other and he has no intention of not taking a big juicy bite of Maia; but she's a wily one and keeps trying to avoid him. When a horse is badly injured at the ranch, Maia goes with Cole to help but a truly awful snowstorm sees her trapped there with the two brothers. These guys may not believe in the magic of Christmas but Maia does and she's determined to share a little of the festive spirit whilst she is there. What none of them expected though was an uneasy presence stalking them, casting the shadow of their dead father, and their trials have only just begun!
Although there is a slight paranormal feel to this book it's more of a romantic suspense and it's quite a heartwarming story that just kind of creeps up on the reader. I knew going in it would be romantic and possibly even a little cheesy but it's a relationship between the brothers and heroine that just builds up and felt quite believable. Both Cole and Maia have gone through life as loners really and even though Maia has a warm giving spirit, she has never really found love.
As this is by Ms Feehan when this couple finally does connect, it's a smouldering read with enough heat to satisfy most readers. What works exceptionally well here is the burgeoning relationship between the two brothers as they learn to trust each other and Maia becomes a bridge between them that ;left me with a warm feeling. There's a mystery to solve and enough suspense and intrigue to keep the reader guessing as to what the outcome will be. These characters are survivors and yet they still have so much more to conquer. Their lives have been unbearably tragic and yet this tale brings hope and love. A great little read at this time of year and as usual Ms Feehan delivers something magical!
