It's 2202 and on board ES Siren, the brilliant Doctor Lily Kwan has worked in secret to develop an antidote for the aphrodisiac rape drug, sexmeth.
She'd be overjoyed if it wasn't for an embarrassing problem: the antidote has no effect on her extraordinary reaction to Connor Madison, the Siren's tough quartermaster. Scientifically, it should be impossible, but the man's a raging fever in her blood. If a single dark glance sets Lily on fire, a kiss might kill her dead – but what a way to go!
A former gang rat from the slums of a dying world, Con came up the hard way, so when geeky Doctor Kwan tops his hit list of possible drug runners, nothing's going to save her—not her family's money, nor her clever mind.
Not even the smile in her eyes.
On board the Siren men outnumber women by four to one and that doesn't help with the tense atmosphere that exists onboard. Those on board know it's a one way trip with no guarantees but there are still some who seek to profit from those less fortunate. Dr Lily Kwan has finally escaped from her father’s oppressive rules and is determined to utilise her skills to finally do something worthwhile. She has heard that the nasty drug Sexmeth is being sold on board and she will stop at nothing to create an antidote. It's an insidious drug that far exceeds any other known date rape drug but in order to understand it, Lily will first have to try it and that means making herself the guinea pig!
Master sergeant Connor Madison is quarter master on board and is well aware that vital supplies are being pilfered and he's determined to put a stop to it. He has his suspicions as to what the missing ingredients are being used for and upon investigating finds that a certain Dr Lily Kwan is showing far too much interest in Sexmeth. Con despises anyone who would profit from the vile drug but there's something about Lily that doesn't quite fit with what he expected. Con sets out to trap Lily but finds himself fast becoming obsessed by the intriguing Doctor but Con has a job to do and not even a woman can tempt him from his path or can she? This is my first story by this author and I really enjoyed it. I think it's fair to say this storyline is really being fleshed out with each novella and the world building has been excellent. I admit that initially I wasn't too sure if I would enjoy this series but I have been well and truly won over now. I enjoy the diverse characters and getting to know them all is fun but the same creepy nefarious bad guy featuring throughout really helps pull these stories together.
Do I like these two characters? Lily has led a privileged life on earth but she has been subjugated by her father and for her, being onboard the Siren is a way of claiming her freedom and I admired her for wanting to fulfill her dreams. She may not be the most glamorous woman in the world but she's a woman that unknowingly clings to her femininity. Con is rough and tough and yet there's something sweet and protective about him that is just so attractive. I loved that he is fascinated by the ribbons in Lily's hair and even though at first he notices her fragility as they spend more time together, it's her inner strength that attracts him. No instant love but yes poor Lily has a problem with lust when it comes to Con. It's something that she sees as having disastrous results but for the reader it's a raunchy ride with a very satisfying conclusion!
I will seek out the next installment which I believe will be available in November and can honestly say this journey into the unknown is proving a fun place to be!
