For justice - could you betray your family?
For love - are you ready to question everything you believe in?
Gifted with the ability to read the shadows of ‘third species’ beings, Caitlin Parish is the Vampire Control Unit’s most powerful agent. Despite that, her mission to hunt down Kane Malloy – a master vampire – comes with a death wish. Many have tried, but few have survived.
For Caitlin, tracking Kane is about more than just professional reputation. With her parents both mysteriously killed 7 years apart to the day, Caitlin knows that without Kane’s help she is next.
She has four days to make a deal with the wicked, the irresistible, the treacherous Kane Malloy. The vampire who despises everything she stands for.
There's fascinating world building that encompasses the usual paranormal fare whilst adding whole new ideas such as third and even fourth species! If totally frank, the beginning took me a while to kind of sort out in my head because of this. As I read on, I realised the humans considered themselves the first species as they seemed to be very much in charge, with vampires and werewolves subjugated and drugged. At one point I envisaged a kind of Escape From New York situation with criminal, degenerate, humans and paranormals all contained in one heavily guarded area. Blackthorn is definitely not a place to go out alone at night!
Kane Malloy is a Master Vampire but fourteen years ago events took place that set him on a trail of destruction and revenge. Caitlin Parrish works for the agency that regulates and indeed controls the so called third species and she has her sights firmly set on capturing the elusive Kane. He's gorgeous, he's dangerous, and he has a proposition for Caitlin that is about to change the way she thinks forever! Now here, I admit the idea of her soul being on the line didn't quite work for me but the intrigue, deception, and corruption that came to light as the story unfolded was a fabulous way to end this story.
I didn't find Blood Shadows to be the usual vampire romance but it's a story with lots of sexy scenes, although I'm still not sure why the couple loved each other! Lots of sexual tension does not necessarily mean love everlasting to me I'm afraid, but overall I did enjoy this story and will happily see just what Ms Pryor has in store for the next book.
