A Lyrical Press Paranormal romance(less)
Grayce is working in a bar but more than that, she's working hard to remain hidden and stay off any social radar. Why? Well Grayce has spent the last three years on the run from her abusive ex boyfriend, knowing if he catches up with her it could well be the end for her. She's terrified of men and with good reason but has discovered her inner anger can give her strength.
Zander, or Z as he likes to be known, is one of a few elite warriors descended from fallen angels. He's known for quite some time the woman destined to complete him is somewhere out there and he's not giving up searching until he finds her. Imagine his shock when he walks through his local gym and feels energy unlike any he's ever felt before! An angry closed off woman is pulling him towards her and boy does he want to gravitate in her direction. However, Zander is no brutish thug, no he's a guy who really wants his mate to feel safe and happy so he decides to play the waiting game and try to win her over.
Even the best lad plans don't always work out, Grayce is attacked outside the gym one night. Zander refuses to stand by anymore and steps in. Grayce feels something she has never felt before for Zander but there's no way she's getting involved with any man. Unfortunately time is not on Grayce's side and her past has well and truly caught up with her. Tyr, the man who previously hurt her so badly has discovered her location and he's determined to reclaim what he sees as his property. When Zander realises the danger Grayce is in, he will stop at nothing to protect his woman but what if that stubborn woman doesn't think she wants his help? The danger Grayce faces is truly evil and it's only by trusting each other that Grayce and Zander will survive. Problem is, trust is not something Grayce is used to giving. Can Zander claim both Grayce's heart and trust before it's too late?
Aflame was full of ideas and I enjoyed it. It's so hard for any writer to find completely new ideas as we are all influenced by so many things but I can see Ms Daniels is trying to create a world of believable characters her audience can care about. The heroine, Grayce, isn't perfect, she's foul mouthed but I think it's a defense mechanism and she's also much braver than she gives herself credit for.
As for the hero Zander (sigh), he's a gorgeous hunk of male with a sensitive soul who truly wants to make his mate happy and will do everything in his power to make her both safe and happy. Lots of steamy moments will help ensure that!
As for the plot, well at times it did remind me of a certain brotherhood. The idea of Tyr and his depravity made this book stand out. The heroine has had a lucky escape but he's such an odious character that as a reader I just wanted to see him get his comeuppance and that's the beauty of this book. I really did not like Tyr! Is he a caricature? Well yes, but this is fiction so there's nothing wrong with it. Bad guys should be vile and good guys are supposed to be heroes so no complaints here. I felt the writing a little self indulgent at times as the author tried to use such emotive language but it did not detract from the storyline. I'd just like to see the next book tightened up a little. The world building still has a way to go but with supporting characters it's shaping up quite nicely to be a good series.
Aflame was a pleasant surprise and as it's Ms Daniels' debut, my admiration knows no bounds. It's sufficiently different to other paranormal romance books out there to both get and hold my attention. Loved the hero, Zander and will certainly look out for the next book. Fabulous fun, although the abusive violence portrayed is quite hard to read about. Well done Ms Daniels and more please!
