When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate—he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in nineteenth-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”
But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself—while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.
But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.
A haunted house on an island, a family under a curse, and a woman with a vengeful ex, now there's a unique plot! I won't go into too much detail as I think half the fun of this book was getting to know the characters and all their little quirks but I will say that for me, Nina stood out as such a likable heroine. She's rebuilding her life and trying to get her gardening business on a firm footing so the idea of working on such an ambitious project is tailor made for her. Oh, and obviously, the fact the owner of the island is smoking hot, doesn't hurt at all! The unfortunate thing is though, the rumours of the house being haunted might just not be rumours. There's definitely something not quite right on the island but just how bad can it get!
This was a fun quirky read and I really enjoyed it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but a mystery to solve, ghostly goings on and budding romance all added up to make this a very entertaining book. Although there's more than one romance happening as this story unfolds, my favourite has to be between Deacon Whitney and Nina Linden. She's such a complicated multi-layered character with a great sense of humour and a passion for life. Speaking of passion, leads me quite nicely back to Deacon who in my mind's eye looked just like Walden from Two and a Half Men! A tall, totally hot computer geek! Oh yes, I can definitely see where Ms Harper got her inspiration from!
This was a charming kind of supernatural whodunit that was told in such a fun way. I loved we had to work out what had happened and although the end wasn't truly a huge surprise, it was still nevertheless a lovely conclusion. A haunted house and ghosts may not sound like the ideal base for a romance, but this book satisfied me. Light and full of interesting characters, I will definitely be reading more from this author.
