A shy American transplant in the heart of London, Liz is slaving away on her grad school project: working to find a cure for the blood cancer that her younger sister died from years ago. Dead focused on her studies, she’s more interested in the chemistry of hemoglobin than in the chemistry between her and any guy.
After an old vampire friend comes asking for a favor, Robb has to choose between repaying a life debt and chasing after the one girl who’s broken through his emotional walls. And when Liz stumbles upon evidence that seems to solve the puzzle of his mysterious seclusion, she confronts him in his lab. Only the dark secret she thought she had uncovered turns out to be something even more terrifying.
With a dead body in the trunk of his Porsche and a vial of cancerous blood in the pocket of her lab coat, Robb and Liz are heading for a collision course that will change both of their lives forever…
Liz is an American studying in London. Her chosen field is haematology as she lost her sister to cancer and now believes the cure lies hidden within human blood. Liz has dedicated her life to this cause and doesn't even have time for dating but meeting Robb Chatham, the rich benefactor of the college where she's studying, changes her world irrevocably. As a student of chemistry, there's no denying what she feels when she looks at Robb is sexual chemistry at it's most potent but Robb's a man of many appetites and Liz has no intention of being just another notch on his bedpost!
Robb has spent more than four hundred years hiding in plain sight because he's a vampire. Turned when still a teenager, he never really had time to live but he did briefly find love. Now all these years later he has learned to control his vampire thirst and lives a comfortable enviable life, but it's an empty one. All he really wants is to find a cure for vampirism and studying haemoglobin is bringing him closer to an answer. Meeting Liz seems like the answer to his prayers. She's smart, she's as obsessed with discovering the secrets of blood as he is and she's probably the most tempting female he's met in a very long time. Robb normally just uses women for sex and food but with Liz, he wants a whole lot more.
Robb's past is never truly dead and buried though and Thad, a fellow vampire, seeks his help in disappearing as he believes he is being hunted. Robb's an honourable man who wants to help but his connection with Liz is putting her in danger. Robb has kept his secret hidden a long time but, unfortunately, it's about to be discovered and it's by the one person he doesn't want to lose!
The word undecided comes to mind when I think about this book. It's well written and a very different type of story but maybe that's why I'm not sure what I really thought. I usually read a vampire romance to escape reality and just wallow in complete fantasy and with this book I didn't feel that. It might be because of all the scientific and medical terms used, as it made it feel almost too clinical at times. I understand Ms Rose was trying to reinforce Liz's work ethic and drive, but I fear the terms might put some readers off. I really wanted to just immerse myself in a paranormal romance but reality intruded a little too much. Yes, blood is essential to life and obviously vampires, but initially it just didn't pull me in.
Although the two main characters are clearly attracted to each other, I did find it quite hard to detect any real chemistry between them. When they do connect, it's heart warming as they both clearly need love so much. So there's passion here and even a happy ending but I'm reasonably sure there's more to come from Robb and Liz.
The mystery of the hunters has not been addressed and Robb's past has not been completely laid to rest. Is vampire blood a possible cure for cancer? Will Robb always be doomed to drink blood? There's so much more for the author to explore and if you enjoy a romance with a supernatural twist then Ms Rose is certainly an author you might want to read.
