I believe in the myth of Earth. I’ve even discovered a bona fide book written in the dead language of my people. My man, Brody, dreams of a secret human colony. He’s searched for years, hunting any rumor we’ve run across, and finally he’s made contact. Usually, he’s the one grounding me to station and keeping my head out of the atmosphere. Time for me to return the favor…that is, if I can ditch the Ko who’ve discovered me, thanks to my incessant artifact-hunting. If we don’t make our rendezvous, and the Ko don’t kill me, Brody just might…
Set in space in a future that sees humans hunted almost to extinction, we are thrown literally into the story featuring Lucy and Brody. They've been together for a few years but have spent the time hiding from the dreaded Ko, a race feared by all species because of their fierce determination to eradicate any who stand in their way. Lucy and Brody use prosthetics to resemble aliens and luckily so far no one seems to have discovered their disguise. Lucy is beyond obsessed with forbidden artifacts from an earth no one really remembers. When she buys contraband memorabilia, it sparks off a chain of events that will see her literally running for her life. Hunted and trapped on a space station on lock down, Lucy will do anything to protect her man, Brody, even sacrifice herself!
Short but packed with likable characters that deserve to find safety and experience true happiness, No Refuge, was a huge surprise. Ms Nichols has greatly intrigued me with the world building here. I did not expect to be hooked so easily but I genuinely felt a connection with the main characters. They are clearly between a rock and a hard place but they don't give up and their love for each other shone through. It's not an easy task to convey emotion with so few pages but I had no doubt these two characters truly cared for each other. Brody came across as fiercely protective and caring whilst Lucy although quite young and naive nevertheless displayed tenacity and courage.
It's an interesting world the author has penned and I'd love to read more stories set in this universe. I'm not sure if more are intended but if so, I sincerely hope for a longer more complete story. Although the reader is quite literally dropped into this storyline, I can honestly say that I really did enjoy reading No Refuge. I'd love to know more about the Ko and just why they hate humans so much. I feel there's a lot more to explore so would certainly be a happy reader if Ms Nicholas decided to expand this into a series. I found this to an interesting and surprisingly sexy short story. It gets going very quickly and doesn't let up as the two central characters plunge headlong into danger. The heroine, Lucy, captivated me and I just wanted her to escape. I've got to hand it to her she's prepared to go to just about any lengths to survive. Obviously the end came quite quickly and was maybe a little too pat, but if a story has to end, then I personally don't object to a happy ending! Fast, fun and futuristic and well worth a read.
No Refuge is an e-book available at Amazon for $2.51 and B & N for $2.99
