Detective Dante Zucco has been tasked with bringing a Shemyaza to justice. As a seris Nephilim, his inner fire comes in handy in battle, but not in love. He's been burned before, but maybe this time he'll find a blaze that matches his own.
One of the families of the human victims has hired Elizabeth Rand, PI, to investigate the murders. It's all Dante can do to keep his hands off the alluring, stubborn woman. A single glance from her gray eyes, and Dante goes up in flames.
Beth suspects Dante is one of the Nephilim, angelic warriors bound to hunt down the evil Shemyaza who haunt the night and feed off the innocent. If the murderer she's tracking is a Shem, then keeping a Nephilim close would be only logical. She agrees to work with the hunky detective, unaware of his growing feelings for her.
When Beth gets too close to finding out the truth behind the Shem kills, her life is put in danger, forcing Dante to protect her the only way he can: with fire.
Dante is descended from angels and works both as a police detective and also as an angelic warrior seeking only to destroy the evil Shem. He has an overwhelming attraction to a certain feisty private detective but bringing her further into his world would only put her at risk. Elizabeth has recently seen the very stuff of nightmares and has no intention of letting the infuriating but gorgeous Dante get under her skin. When she discovers a dead woman literally outside her office, their two worlds look set to collide! Dante might want to protect Elizabeth but she's not the type of woman to run and hide. As they uncover the truth, it's clear age old enemies are to blame but political machinations are also in play. When you can't trust those you should rely on, just how do you know who the bad guys are?
Wow, what a complicated idea this series is. First, there are so many different types of angelic descendants that if I'm honest I had to keep stopping and remembering who could do what and just which powers they had! The good guys all seem to have different abilities ranging from flight to healing and our hero has the gift of utilizing fire! The bad guys also have diverse talents and both sides have different names for their sub types and if I'm really honest, it did stop the flow a teeny bit as all this was explained. Nevertheless the actual storyline was very interesting with political intrigue, murder and blackmail all playing a part. There was a mystery to solve and luckily our heroine, Elizabeth, was most definitely on the case! She's a gung-ho type who doesn't seem to flinch away from any challenge and is extremely likable. Elizabeth is also loyal to her friends and I look forward to discovering more about some of them.
Then of course, there is Detective Dante Zucco, part angel, part Italian male and most definitely all man! He has no trouble in recognizing his growing feelings for Elizabeth and certainly no intention of ever letting her go! His Italian family is absolutely hilarious and I could easily imagine the cringing, which made me smile! There's nothing as annoying as a well meaning family and I thought Ms Bell did a really good job in bringing that idea across to the reader.
So what can I say? A very hot romance (in more ways than one!) with plenty of chemistry. Lots of world building and a suspense filled story that really entertained me. If you enjoy paranormal romance then start checking out this author as her imagination is top notch!
