Dr. Lara McInnis reads auras and flirts with an elusive ability to foretell the future. Ambivalent about the magic within her, she’s done a fine job ignoring other aspects of her power—until now. After several patients—and a student or two—describe the same cataclysmic dream, she uncovers ancient evil intent on draining her power. Lara knows next to nothing about her psychic side, but it will destroy her if she can’t come to terms with it.
Trevor Denoble has secrets, but he shields them well with a stunning body and a boatload of British charm. The airline he works for folds because there’s no fuel for the planes, and Lara’s changing into someone he barely recognizes. Though he doesn’t know it yet, the rest of his carefully crafted life is about to come crashing down too.
Living in a world teetering on the edge of anarchy, Trevor and Lara are faced with a series of painful decisions. Is the love between them enough for Trevor to swallow his distrust of Lara’s burgeoning paranormal ability? Will their personal demons tear them apart in a world gone mad, as shortages of everything from electricity to food escalate?
For a start Dark Prophecy is a story featuring an established couple who have been together for several years and yet there are still things to uncover about themselves. Then, from the very beginning, the reader quickly discovers the heroine, Lara, has acquired a very determined stalker. As a reader, I was lulled into believing this book was romantic suspense, but yet again the author had a surprising twist up her sleeve. Lara has psychic abilities and as the story unravels Lara's gifts transform her and the evil the reader was concerned about initially is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg!
Well, this will teach me to read the synopsis of books or will it? I admit I saw the cover with the sexy hunk and attractive female and thought ooh, another romance from Ms Gimpel and as I have enjoyed her previous sexy stories, just thought "yes please I'd like to read that". So imagine my surprise when this delightful story began to unfold and led me in completely unexpected directions. This is quite a dark read as the planet seems to be running out of its natural resources; although at first I just thought the characters were experiencing a fairly normal power shortage, but as I read on more was revealed and what a shocking turn it was.
The heroine Lara works as a therapist and her gifts certainly aid her but Dark Prophecy brings all sorts of preconceived ideas into question. Dreams, Fae, cute puppies, even the famous Carl Yung and his beliefs feature here making this far more than just a romantic paranormal but a book to make you think and I can think of no greater praise!
This is the first book in a new series and I can't wait to see where this storyline leads.
