P.I. Archer Drake has been hired by Leah's mother to keep an eye on her. But the more time he spends watching, the more he finds himself infatuated. Before long, he even finds himself agreeing to help find the person who wants her dead. Over and over again.
Now going full-on "rewind," Leah hopes it can stave off the inevitable. After all, she's grown fond of this life - and even fonder of nerdy Archer. But changing her pattern means finding out who her killer is today. And as Leah fears, that could be anyone she has come to know and trust. Anyone.
What I liked: Ms Davidson has a special place in my heart. Not to be maudlin but when my Mom passed away from breast cancer, I completely stopped reading. Prior to that I devoured books and the majority of them were historical romance. Not only had I lost my Mom but my very favorite pastime. Five years later, I decided to try reading again. I knew it would have to be something completely different than historical romance. On a lark I picked up Undead and Unwed and the weirdest thing happened. I started reading, quickly flipping pages and actually was laughing out loud. Slowly but surely, I reconnected with my love of reading.
Now about Deja Who. As I mentioned, it’s a different concept from most fantasy books (I’m not sure whether to classify it as Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance). I wasn’t sure what to expect but knew I would have a few chuckles however Deja Who is a bit deeper and darker than I thought. I could not put it down.
I think I’ve mentioned before how much the characters in books drive whether I like it or love it. Ms Davidson can write some characters. Where I expected light-hearted, I got complex. Leah Nazir (Certified Insighter) is by no means happy. As a matter of fact, she’s almost down right depressing and she can be hard to get along with. She does her job, helping individuals come to accept and deal with their “past lives”. Wow. Some of those past lives are so horrible; some are victims and some are murderers but the idea of knowing about your past life and maybe trying to change your future outcome, now that’s a unique premise. Leah is tired of dying. She’s been murdered a lot in her past lives. She wants to change the dynamic and works towards making herself more aware and physically fit to deal with her murderer whenever he/she appears.
Enter P.I. Archer Drake. Their first face to face meeting sets the tone for the rest of the book and it’s a doozy. In Leah’s current life, which she is enjoying more or less, her childhood was something of a nightmare but she survived and made her way forward. Archer is working for her mother, not a good thing but there is just something about Archer that draws Leah in (me too). For one thing there’s the fact that Leah…..nope can’t tell you that. Archer is almost like a puppy in his quest to get Leah to like him because he likes her A LOT. I want to say for as dark as Leah is, Archer is the light.
The other character I can’t wait to learn more about and hope she remains in the series is Cat (Catherine Carey). She is Leah’s only friend until Archer enters the picture. Leah has seen all of Cat’s past lives and none of them end happily. She hangs out on a park bench and looks homeless but isn’t. I like the character because she’s a lot deeper than she seems. She’s smart but has some weird foibles. Leah loves it all.
What I didn’t like: When I first started Deja Who, the beginning was a bit hard to get through. It’s only because I didn’t see where Ms Davidson was taking the story. It wasn’t an opening you would expect. Believe me, get through it and you will be hooked. The opening is more important than you think and you’ll only realize that later in the book.
Now, you might think because I credit Ms Davidson with my reconnection with reading that I might be a tad bit prejudiced in her favor, I’m not, I don’t think. Ms Davidson writes outside the box. She does the unexpected with her stories and her characters. To get me to read a book about reincarnation and enjoy it about is a feat.
I can’t wait to see where the characters and the storyline go next.
