I am Glheanna the Decimator. I am a warrior. A soldier. I know no fear. No pain. No mercy. I do, however, know acute embarrassment! How could I not after getting dumped by a bastard dragon in front of my own troops? So I tuck tail and return to my cave, drowning my sorrows in ale—as is my family’s way. But instead of leaving me to my misery, I’ve been summoned to the Dragon Queen’s court.
As if my life wasn’t pathetic enough, Her Majesty now has me escorting the highborn Bram the Merciful through dangerous territories—not exactly the best use of my military training. And just so he can negotiate with enemy dragons instead of battling them? Honestly, what has my world come to? Then again…Bram is quite easy on the eyes. And the perfect distraction for what ails me. Perhaps I’m looking at all this the wrong way. Maybe there is a place for a little “mercy” in my life…
This review will be a little different than my normal script as it's a novella and I didn't find anything not to like about Dragon on Top.
First of all, how I missed Dragon on Top I have no idea. I'm all about Ms Aiken's Dragonkin series. I've re-read them so many times especially when I'm a bit down or just need a good laugh. Ms Aiken has a rare talent in my humble opinion. There's a complete story with tons and tons of characters, humor and the weird and different attractions she puts her characters through. It's not all about the dragons all the time.
Dragon on Top is Bram the Merciful's story and how he and Ghleanna the Decimator became a couple. Bram has been attracted to Ghleanna for what seems like forever. He spent a lot of time with her family when she was younger. It appears she never noticed him, which brings many hilarious moments between the two on their trip together. Well, it's supposed to be a trip but turns into a bit of an ambush. Yeah, you need to read about that part yourself.
Ghleanna has had many embarrassing moments through her life but one of the biggest is being the daughter of Ailean the Wicked, "also known as Ailean the Slag, well-known whore of the dragon and human world." She feels the males around her thinks she an easy lay so she is careful of her love life. The whole opening of Dragon on Top deals with her most recent heartbreak and how she is handling being a topic of her troops, but not in a good way or so she thinks.
I positively loved the characters in this novella. The good thing, if you've not read any of the other Dragonkin books, it doesn't really matter as Dragon on Top takes place well before any of the other stories in the series.
Dragon on Top is Ms Aiken at her finest. Don't miss a chance to laugh out loud and enjoy the snarkiness at its best!!
I received a copy of Dragon on Top from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
