Hades’ Carnival, Book 5
Now that the five-thousand-year curse that kept him and his fellow shapeshifting warriors trapped in animal form has been lifted, Mordecai doesn’t quite know what to do with himself. He is free—in theory.
Hell left its stain on his soul, and his relationship with the warriors who once trusted him is uneasy. The only bright spot in his life is Jessica, whose shining innocence he dare not taint with his inner darkness. But it’s getting harder and harder to stay away from her.
Jessica longs for the days she and Mordecai shared an easy friendship. Now he seems as distant as the stars. He denies there’s a problem, but she’s determined to penetrate his shields.
Hades has been plotting his revenge from his prison. He can’t harm Mordecai without harming himself. But there’s nothing to stop him from wreaking havoc by hurting the one woman Mordecai would give his life to protect—Jessica.
Warning: Vengeance, hot steamy sex and heart-melting romance.
Hades may be held prisoner and powerless but his thirst for revenge knows no bounds. He has sacrificed much in his quest for power and still has the goal of ruling both mortal and immortal realms. Because of the ancient curse, he cannot strike directly at the immortal warriors but he has a plan and it involves the all too human Jessica. It's simple really, if he hurts Jessica he also hurts Mordecai and for Hades that's a win-win scenario. He may be held captive but Hades refuses to go down without a fight. As Mordecai tries to protect the only woman he has ever had feelings for, plans are afoot to bring his world crashing down!
Oh this was such a very quick read and if honest, I'm a little bit disappointed. Yes, I know Ms Walters intended it to be short but I just felt things wererushed a little bit and I wanted slightly more. That being said, this is a very passionate story and those who enjoy a very steamy romance will most definitely not be disappointed. I personally would have liked more interaction between the various characters and particularly wanted to learn more about the Gods but as a quick sexy read then it certainly delivers.
Heart of the Serpent is bound to be a must read for those who have followed the series but it's also a great little piece of pure escapism. This is clearly an author with immense imagination and talent and as a fan of paranormal romance I'm certainly going to seek out more of her work.
