THE SWEETEST TEMPTATION…
Black ops agent Solomon Judah awakens caged and bound in a twisted zoo where otherworlders are the main attraction. Vika Lukas, the owner’s daughter, is tasked with Solo’s care and feeding. The monster inside him yearns to kill her on sight, even though she holds the key to his escape. But the human side of him realizes the beautiful deaf girl is more than she seems—she’s his.
THE ULTIMATE PRICE…
Vika endures the captives’ taunts and loathing, hoping to keep them alive even if she can’t free them. Only, Solo is different—he protects her. But as hostility turns to forbidden romance, his feelings for her will be used against him…and he’ll be put to a killer test.
Vika perplexed me with her stubborn refusal to leave what's truly a diabolical life. I do understand she has felt let down badly by others in the past but I'm not sure staying with the circus and her increasingly evil father really helped those she wanted to protect.
Solo is a different type of alien (although there are familiar species in this book) and his self-doubt fuels his actions. Yet he cannot deny that inner voice that makes him want to protect Vika. Strong, almost demonic in form, but loyal and courageous. Solo also shows incredible patience with Vika but alas when it comes to others, if you are not on his side then watch out!
I really enjoyed this setting and thought the circus was such a cruel place. The big bad is exactly that, but it's an oppressive, dark place to be and it felt like dog fight dog. I've enjoyed other books by this author and couldn't help but notice each chapter here is prefaced by a biblical quote. I am used to her stories about demons and Angels so be aware Ms Showalter has a faith that is part of her, but I cannot help but wonder if some readers might find it a little too strong. Lead a horse to water and all that.
There is a very strong element of good versus evil with (how shall I describe this?) two Jiminy Cricket types, one advocating light and one most definitely leading the charge for dark! What I can say is every book I've read by this author has featured a loving monogamous relationship and this story is no different.
Perhaps the sexual content is less explicit but the chemistry, passion, and build up is still present. I did like the story and I'm keen to see what happens next but think I do prefer her slightly more sexy reads.
