Lucius Cooley Willan is a Nightmare Demon with a penchant for gambling and sleeping with women he shouldn’t’t and it’s landed him in hot water. Now he spends his nights slinking in humans dreams and unleashing terrors so strong it kills them so he can capture their soul for his boss. But when he’s ordered to attack the group that hunts his kind he’s enthralled by the feisty inventor he comes upon.
Eliza’s victim to Lucius in a way no others have been, a sensual dream that she can’t shake when she wakes up. When he bumps into her at the trains she’s an addiction he can’t shake. When he outright disobeys the demon who controls him for some out of dreams interactions with the Eliza, it will be up to him to save her from the nightmare he’s put her in.
Eliza is our heroine and she's a truly amazing inventor who works for the Alliance of Silver and Steam in their war against demons. Eliza is plagued by very erotic dreams featuring the insanely handsome Lucius, but has no idea he really exists. Lucius is a Nightmare Demon sent to steal the souls of those his evil employer covets, but when he meets Eliza he realises she is more than just the enemy, she also happens to be his Mate! Eliza is his target but she is also everything he desires.
Nighmare in Steam is the first book in this series, but I kind of felt I had missed out on some things. Upon checking, I have discovered there is a novella (Demon in Steam) available that gives background about some of the characters, so I wish I had known that sooner. That having been said, I was transported into this world Ms Ostrow has created with its crazy mixture of adventure and romance; but feel I should say a cautionary word. There are a lot of saucy scenes in this book and for this reader possibly too many, as I wanted action. Although I will admit Seraphina, who tries to control Lucius, is a thoroughly nasty piece of work and really brought the story to life.
There is a lot for this couple to deal with if they are going to survive and for Lucius it's a particularly harrowing journey. Two such different characters with totally opposite agendas are about to discover the nightmare is only just beginning!
