At first Johanna was shy, but as Gabriel tenderly revealed the splendid pleasures they would share, she came to suspect that she was falling in love with her gruff new husband. And it was soon apparent to the entire Highlands clan that their brusque, gallant laird had surrendered his heart completely. But now a desperate royal intrigue threatened to tear her from his side—and to destroy the man whose love meant more to her than she had ever dreamed!
What I liked: I can always count on a Julie Garwood historical romance to bring me back to my reading roots. There's hot men, headstrong heroines, some hot (not overblown) sex scenes, love and subtle humor and sometimes, not so subtle.
When I first read this, I had no idea, Johanna was only sixteen. She still reads and feels older. But maybe in the time she lived, a 15 year old equaled a 27 year old. I know they married young but wow. Today, this might seem like child abuse but you have to remember the era the book represents.
The opening scene in Saving Grace is wonderful and sets the tone for the rest of the story. Johanna is one of my favorite historical heroines and Gabriel is just.....mmmm. Their interactions are great. Johanna is one smart young lady and the way she brings the Clan together is clever and devious.
They had a sale on this audio book and I thought I'd give it a try while doing some chores around the house. I think I expected more from the narrator. She's very proper English and the voices and accents don't quite come off. It's not consistent. In one scene, I'll think, oh Gabriel's voice is dreamy and love the accent and then the next, he'll almost sound barbaric.
Since I know the story by heart, I just enjoyed the reading. Like a bedtime story, I guess.
What I didn't like: I'm glad I had Saving Grace to listen to while doing some housework but am glad it was not my first introduction to a Julie Garwood historical.
The pricing is pretty standard. The Kindle version is $5.99 and the paperback is $7.19. At Barnes & Noble the e-book and paperback are both $7.99
Highly recommend the audio edition of Saving Grace!!!
