The Cajun dive in the middle of the godforsaken swamps wasn’t exactly Trap Dawkins’ idea of fun. But the GhostWalker wasn’t there for a good time. He was looking for her. Cayenne. It’s where she found her victims. Poor suckers. Then again, who wouldn’t want to leave a place like this with a woman like her?
It’s not Cayenne’s fault. Locked up, experimented on and never knowing kindness, she was bred this way—with a heart of pure venom. Trap understands her. He survived his own dark past and he shares her desire for getting even. But now Trap’s greatest danger is Cayenne herself. Because what’s inside her is hard to control—especially when it’s aroused by a lover as reckless as Trap.
We met Trap Dawkins and Cayenne is the previous book, Viper Game and I could not wait for their story. I pre-ordered Spider Game back in May 2015. I will not be preordering any more in the GhostWalker Series. So, let’s start in reverse order of most of my reviews:
What I didn’t like: I felt like I was reading straight erotica with a D/s theme. That’s not at all how this series started and I’m pretty much done with it. I think I skimmed 2/3 of Spider Game due to the repeated sex scenes. I get it, I really do, most women like sex in their books but when the majority of the book is sex, it leaves little for the characters and their development, a sense of the wonderful location, and most of all, plot. I’m not by any means a writer so I don’t know the process Ms Feehan is going through right now. Let me say this, I thought Trap and especially Cayenne had the chance to be outstanding characters, I thought the other members of GhostWalker Team 4 could have played a bigger part.
I get that these alpha guys are full of testosterone, I get they like to be in charge, I get that Dr. Peter Whitney did something to pair them with a single enhanced female. I do, BUT, they don’t have to be written as overbearing, cruel, sadistic….I think you get my point. The men in most of the previous installments treated their mated female with more respect not just because they were their mate, but because, the women were smart, they could stand on their own two feet, they did not need a male making all the decisions!!
The GhostWalker men have been put through some pretty horrible things, enhanced in ways they didn’t sign up for; but the women were just plain tortured and used as lab rats. So what would make me want to see the woman’s mated male treat her with such disrespect and also be cruel about it. Okay, enough on that point.
The sex scenes….how many ways can you describe a man’s happy stick?? A shaft, a smooth bullet, yeah, yeah…I get this also…he’s smoking hot and great looking. He has a penchant for playing games in bed, okay. I don’t want to read about every single one of his fantasies. I have a mind, I can fill in some of the innuendos. And poor Cayenne. She has zero practical experience at anything, including sex. So this is how Trap decides to introduce her to “making love”. I gotta stop.
Next, there are so many repeated descriptions for almost every character and place. I understand, Gino can go anywhere and not be noticed. I don’t have to have it explained to me each time Gino is mentioned. Draden is a great shot and always fires two shots when sniping. How many times do I have to be told, Draden’s signature is a two shot kill?
Horrible things happened to Trap when he was a child and again as a young adult. He’s off the charts smart and is a doctor. I expected more from his character than to brow beat his mate and not trust her around his GhostWalker brothers. They depend on each other and trust each other with their lives, so you (Trap) don’t trust one of them talking and teasing your mate. No!!
What I liked: Yes, there are things I liked about Spider Game. Nonny is in it for one thing. That says a lot. There was one scene where Trap was duped by Cayenne and his team finally were able to tease and laugh about it. It was a highlight.
The action scenes were very well done and completely held my attention as I tried to figure out how Ms Feehan would get the characters out of such a deadly situation. Learning a bit more about the team member’s abilities was entertaining.
The appearance of some previous characters teased with what could be the long game of Dr. Whitney and that had me on the edge of my seat. I loved it as a matter of fact because I wondered when Ms Feehan would go back to that story arc.
And the plot had such potential. **Slight spoiler if you’ve not read Viper Game** I looked forward to Wyatt and Trap working to figure out how to make the triplets safe to be around and yet that was barely mentioned except in relation to Cayenne also having a venomous bite.
I spent $7.99 on my Kindle edition and the paperback editions are cheaper. I do feel cheated and that’s why I won’t continue with the series UNLESS, I read some outstanding reviews when the next book releases.
Overall, much like the Dark (Carpathian) series and the Leopard People series, the GhostWalker series has become erotica with overbearing, cruel men as the leads. It’s borderline abusive.
