A foundling raised in a world of humans
Growing up, orphaned Josephine didn’t know who or what she was—just that she was “bad,” an outcast with strange powers. Her baby brother Thaddeus was as perfect as she was flawed; protecting him became her entire life. The day he was taken away began Jo’s transition from angry girl... to would-be superhero... to enchanting, ruthless villain.
A lethally sensual enforcer on a mission
A threat to the Møriør has brought archer Rune the Baneblood to the mortal realm to slay the oldest living Valkyrie. Whether by bow or in bed, he never fails to eliminate his target. Yet before he can strike, he encounters a vampiric creature whose beauty conceals a black heart. With one bite, she pierces him with aching pleasure, taking his forbidden blood -and jeopardizing the secrets of his brethren.
A boundless passion that will lead to sweet ruin...
Could this exquisite female be a spy sent by the very Valkyrie he hunts? Rune knows he must not trust Josephine, yet he’s unable to turn her away. Despite his millennia of sexual conquests, he can’t ignore the unfamiliar longing she arouses deep within him. When Jo betrays the identity of the one man she will die to protect, she and Rune become locked in a treacherous battle of wills that pits ultimate loyalty against unbridled lust.
Rune is known as the Archer because quite simply he doesn't miss. He also happens to be part Fae and part demon which means his bodily fluids - blood, saliva etc. are pure poison. He's tasked by Orion, the leader of the Moiror, to travel to New Orleans to kill Nix, but first he has to find that elusive Valkyrie. What he hadn't expected was to scent another female who could quite literally bring him to his knees!
Jo is something other. With no memory of her childhood, all she has is her baby brother, Thaddeus, who she yearns to be with. Yet Jo walked away when she literally died and arose as a powerful and vengeful ghost. She's a curious mixture of woman and child but her life gets complicated when the dark Fae, Rune, attracts her attention. Not only does he smell delicious but he seems to be targeting her baby brother and that's something Jo can't allow.
I loved that Ms Cole gave us a much clearer picture of what the Accession could truly bring about. Annihilation of worlds is a huge possibility and to prevent that, the Moiror are set to step in. We have previously seen Nix and those who follow her as the good guys but that idea is turned on its head somewhat here. Nix goes a step too far in my opinion which didn't sit well, but I do admit the outcome benefited the characters in Sweet Ruin. No spoilers obviously, but Jo has a lot to learn as she is completely ignorant of the Lore and the supernatural world. So not only is Jo a total conundrum but we also get Rune and his shady past. He's a male who believes wholeheartedly in Orion and their task but events take place here that will make him question all he believes in.
Yes, it's a hot romance, but more importantly it's a continuation of what has been a fabulous series. I'm so curious about those who Rune works with and dare I hope we have just been introduced to the one male Nix will want to tumble with herself? Oo, I think we have because Nix deserves someone powerful and Orion fits that bill! Also with the connection to the Dacians (remember the tournament in Shadows Claim?), I'm hoping Ms Cole will start tying up all the loose ends. Sweet Ruin might be a touch divisive amongst fans with its stark cover and new set of characters but for me, it was a must read.
