Feelings are a luxury I can’t afford. Hidden behind a shield of quiet placidity, I keep my secret safe from those who’d use it against me. Until him—the tatted up, self-centered Scar assassin hired to protect me.
He takes pleasure in tormenting me, chipping away at my defenses as if I’m a toy to be played with. I hate that he continuously reminds me that I’m nothing more than a job. I hate that my body responds to his touch. I hate him.
I’m not a good guy and I don’t pretend to be. Condemn me if you want, I don’t give a fuck. You’re nothing to me. No one is … except her—Max. She’s my target. And I was hired to do a hell of a lot more than protect her … I was hired to kill her.
It should’ve been simple, but it was complicated as hell.
Paranormal romance with erotic elements. Full-length novel. Come meet the Scars.
Scars: Immortal warriors with capabilities derived from the senses:Trackers, Sounders, Healers, Tasters, Visionaries, and the rareReflectors. They each have what is known as an Ink, a tattoo that can be called life.
Scars are, I suppose you could say, immortal warriors who possess incredible abilities from enhanced hearing to the ability to track and even heal and that's where our heroine comes in. Max is a healer whose entire family has been eradicated by a truly evil Scar who wants to use her healing power. She spent six years as his prisoner and was finally rescued, but she's broken and has encased her heart in ice. Step forward one very aggravating Scar named Jasper. He isn't nice, he isn't kind, and he has been hired to kill Max! What's a girl to do? From the very first moment they meet, Jasper challenges Max to reveal her true feelings and just let go. Theirs is an insanely damaged relationship as neither one is totally honest with the other. From the moment they meet you can feel the sexual tension that throbs between them, but can either one trust the other enough to let them in? They are both hiding behind unscalable walls and yet, as the story progresses it's hard not to root for them. You will not like Jasper, so do not expect to but as the plot heats up, his weakness for Max is his saving grace.
So there's a lot to swallow here with Scars, Goddesses and living Ink that provides power. The heroine has truly been brutalized but I liked that she has survived and has become so much stronger. Our hero is in many ways an antihero, who is crude, and yet when push comes to shove he has a vulnerability that makes the reader cheer for him. I really enjoyed the way Ms Rose gave us chapters from dual points of view as it helped illuminate the story so much more. Yes, I was a tad unsure at first as there wasn't a lot of world building initially but the sheer intensity was breathtaking! I'd love to read more and sincerely hope the author continues this series as it's perhaps the most original I've read in a long time.
I was gifted a copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
