Luke Thorne loves having one hell of a good time. As the ruler of every dark creature to walk the earth, he certainly has more than a bit of a bad side. He lives for danger and isn’t the type to lose his heart—mostly because he doesn’t have one. Then she walks into his life.
Mina James is seduction in the flesh, a perfect temptation that the devil himself couldn’t pass up. Too late, Luke realizes he’s let a real siren into his life, a woman who is bent on using his dark powers to free herself from hidden enemies. Since Luke isn’t the type of man to be used, he should walk away from her, but…something about Mina draws him close.
Soon he’s realizing that she isn’t who she appears to be. Not dark and cold, but burning red hot. Mina is a woman fighting for her life—and the Lord of the Dark suddenly finds himself in an unlikely role…hero. Luke isn’t going to let her enemies destroy Mina. He will fight heaven and hell to keep her. But in the end, the secrets they both carry may just rip apart a love that should never have been…
There are Bad Things in the world…very, very bad. Are you ready for them?
From the start we meet the somewhat jaded Luke and the author pulls no punches but quickly lets the reader know he is the big bad that haunts the night. Okay, now we have that out of the way what else is left to creep out the reader? Well, there's the mystery surrounding Mina, a woman with a singular talent for getting her own way! No spoilers here but Mina is definitely getting into hot water when she targets Luke, but far from being vengeful Luke is absolutely pole axed by her audacity.
I have to admit the attraction between them is almost nuclear but there's a lot to go through before they get jiggy if you take my meaning. As to what they have to deal with, well they share a common enemy who is powerful with a pretty long reach. As this is the first book in the Bad Things series, we not only get introduced to those with pretty nasty ideas but also interesting supporting characters which include shifters, a vampire, and then of course there's someone who is much closer to Luke! I can easily see the direction the second book might take but just how the author will improve on the tense passionate story here remains to be seen.
If you want a story pulsating with mystery and fire and of course bad guys, then The Devil in Disguise ticks all those boxes. Best of all though is the fact that not everything is black or white and just who is good and who is bad gets put to the test. I think you can tell I loved it and I can't wait to read the next book.
I was gifted a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
